About using AI
AI may enhance efficiency and learing, it must not replace the researcher’s responsibility for accuracy, ethics, and compliance
Purpose of this page
This page guides the responsible use of AI tools in Team Neuropsychiatry. It applies to all staff, students, and affiliates using AI (such as large language models (i.e. ChatGPT) and code assistants) in work-related activities.
The goal is to:
-> Use AI as a supporting tool for research and professional development
-> Always protect privacy, data security and intellectual property
-> Maintain research quality and scientific integrity
Key principles of AI usage
Below are the principles we uphold as a team regarding the use of AI
1. Privacy and dataprotection
This might even be the most important one. Always handle personal, confidential, and sensitive research data with care. If you need to use an AI tool to analyze research data or confidential/sensitive information, discuss this first with your supervisor and make sure they are on board. Only choose a tool that meet the Amsterdam UMC privacy and security requirements. AI Proeftuin of the Amsterdam UMC is an in-house approved tool.
2. Quality and Integrity
Before using AI-assisted/-generated text, code and analyses, take time to review the outputs critically. Review the outputs with literature, established methods, experts on the subject (e.g. your supervisor, a statistician, etc.), and your own expertise/common sense.
3. Ownership & Authorship
Remind: you are responsible for any content created by yourself, with or without support from AI tools. Making you also accountable for this content (thesis, code, figures, etc.). AI tools should not be listed as co-authors. Additionally, all AI use must respect copyright and licensing requirements.
4. Efficiency & Professional development
AI can absolutely be helpful in making everyday-tasks easier, and it can support learning. However, keep develping your own writing, research/analyzing methods, and critical thinking skills. Don’t rely on any AI tool for this, make sure it will support you and not overtake your skills.
